...and as one who notices these things but rarely gets around to commenting, I've noticed and been amused by the peculiar distress Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl"* and seems to cause a lot of male bloggers. It seems to provoke a curious self-righteous desire to declare oneself immune to the commercialization and appropriation of something straight guys who want to be seen as all round good eggs in the culture war find very problematic - that they find girls kissing girls (and all that entails) HAWT while boys kissing boys is guh-ross.

The thing is, most straight guys envy the fact that if a straight girl wants to play around with sexuality and gender and stray from the normal, she gets to do it with women, sensual, fragrant, erogenous from head to spike heel. Whereas the only alternative a straight male has is men, hairy, smelly, burping men. For a long time the supposed alt-culture liked to insist we were all a little bit bi and that we should express it rather than repress it (or at least go to post-punk gigs wearing HOW DARE YOU ASSUME I'M STRAIGHT? badges). And whereas I liked the idea of doubling the number of potential playthings, seeing how miserably I was doing in repressed squaresville mode, I just couldn't find it in me to fancy any men I knew....

* Song and video to be discussed later if only to use the phrase "discount Hot Topic lingerie shower with labored hosiery-stroking" and mention it's obligatory to say you prefer Jill Sobule's song of the same title because that's PROPER LESBIANISM and undermines your patriarchal suburban prison, daddy-o.
