gloomy way to start the year

Reading a string of articles on retirement on online finance-porn sites (like this and this and all the pages that lead off from them) is depressing me somewhat. And making me angry. People who earn more than me who have more savings than me are moaning about how they won't be able to afford to retire until they're 84 -- and the advice tends to be to sell everything you own, take a second job, live without pleasure and put all the resultant savings into your 401(k) and then maybe you'll be able to take it easy when you hit 82. No lattes though -- these fartfaces at Money Magazine get all indignant at the thought that someone out there in America is spending $3.00 on a coffee when they could be investing that money. You should drink nothing but tapwater and give the $15 you save each week to their buddies in the industry. And no putting it into some safe, guaranteed income fund, losers! Stick in all into edgy tech stocks! Dare to be rich! There's always a couple of pennies in social security for market-fearing cowards. Or not, if the industry gets its way....

So who out there amongst you is on course for a delightful retirement? Who has got that million or so stashed away for when they're 65? Don't be afraid of seeming smug.
