Current music:associates - gloomy monday

A damp day in Jimtopia
Shorter James Lileks: Perhaps you'll be interesting in this television show called 24 I've just discovered. There's a fellow in it called Jack Bauer who gets into all manner of improbably scrapes.

(And talking about bores, we happened to be at the Barton Creek mall on Sunday to get some photographs of the lad taken for non-internet savvy relatives in distant lands and I spotted a crowd of Jimbo lookalikes at the doors of the Apple Store ten minutes before noon. A tragic, Day of the Dead sight. We didn't stick around as I suspected they would turn nasty and start clawing at the glass and howling if the doors didn't spring open at exactly twelve. I don't hate Apple and their products are mostly dandy but their fan club is truly tragic and keeps me from switching. The only redeeming thing about the whole PC world is that you don't have to be a frothing evangelist and buy into the whole thing. You don't have to invest any emotion or faith in a company, a logo and a sterile lifestyle. Everyone who uses a PC in some way hates PCs, regards everything Microsoft, Dell and so on with contempt and has as little to do with the non-functional side as possible. You ignore every update and new release until your system grinds to a halt. You find the thing that works and you stick with it. You don't salivate and queue up outside Fry's because a new limited edition model endorsed by Bono with a 5% smaller footprint has been released three months after your last big purchase.)

Feh. Yeah - I kind of bought into OS X because it's enough like Linux to be useful when I need BASH but I don't wind up spending 25% of my time fucking with it instead of doing things, like I do with a PC loaded w/ Debian/X/BlackBox. If I'd known that they were going to port it to Intel, I might have bought a ThinkPad instead. :(

I've been in an Apple store, but it's usually either to play "stump the 'genius'" or to purchase some mac-only bit of widgetry. I always wind up feeling like I just got ripped off, badly.

And I still don't understand the success of the iPod Shuffle. It's an utter piece of crap, and highway robbery, to boot. Hell, I bought a 512mb SD card a little while back and they threw in a free MP3 player with nearly the same functionality for free.

For the price of the iPod shuffle, you can also get a similarly sized and functioning mp3 player that looks like a Pez dispenser.

There's NOTHING you can't make cooler by putting a PEZ head on it.

I do happen to use Apple computers exclusively at home but I consider myself the equivalent of the non-evangelical Christian who practices the religion because that's how she was brought up (Dad brought home a II+ in 1980 and moved up the product line) and she finds it a comforting platform but isn't one of those wackjobs who gets all gung-ho and preachy about it.

My father, on the other hand, is very devout in his faith. I used to cringe when my father would shout "MACINTOSH!" in crowded movie theaters when he spotted one on-screen. He also used to ask me what platform my boyfriends used and would express disappointment when he learned that I didn't land myself another Mac lover. I think he finally, if sadly, accepted that everyone I've brought home uses PCs. It's both a matter of greater statistical likelihood and not marrying my old man.
